The Ferrari of Theseus

How much of a car do you need to rebuild the original car that it still counts as the original car?  That's the conundrum we face as restorers pull up barn finds to look for vehicles that have incredible stories, but not much in the way of metal.  Sure, a bolt here, a buff here, no problem, but what happens when the only thing left is a VIN number and paper records?
